The story
Michelin AraNea Composite's story begins in 2019, based on Michelin's fiberglass-based technology used in tires.
A pioneer in materials science, the Michelin Group wanted to leverage its know-how and unique expertise in high-tech materials beyond mobility by introducing disruptive innovations to serve high-tech markets such as construction.
Michelin AraNea Composite identified the fiber-reinforced concrete market as an area where this material could provide a differentiating offering. The fiber-reinforced concrete market suffers from its high carbon footprint and steel's susceptibility to corrosion. It accounts for 8% of global CO² emissions, more than sea and air traffic combined.
With its strong expertise in composite reinforcement, Michelin AraNea Composite continues to develop a sustainable alternative to metal reinforcement for the reinforced concrete markets for prefabrication, UHPC, paving and more. Since 2022, over 25,000 kilometers of reinforcements have been produced. More than a dozen patents have been filed for Michelin AraNea Composite technology. Today, a team of over 20 people continue to work together on the development of this technology.
